Oxer Bastegieta Kuusu 2021

A dry red wine from V.T. Castilla y León, crafted by Oxer Wines. It features an intense cherry color, aromas of ripe black fruit, violets, and spices, balanced by a refined structure and a long finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tinta de Toro, Albillo Mayor
  • D.O. / Region: V.T. Castilla y León
  • Winery: Oxer Wines
  • Soil / Altitude: Sandy soils with quartz, 600 meters altitude

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from a single centenary vineyard planted in 1920 in Villabuena del Puente, spanning just 0.9 hectares. Situated at an altitude of 600 meters, the vines grow in sandy soils with a high quartz content. These conditions, combined with very low yields, result in highly concentrated fruit.

Ideal combination

Why buy it

With Toro, you usually get ultra-massive wines, but with Oxer, that's about the opposite 😉 Ripe plum and blackberry, violet perfume, a touch meaty but open and expressive. Elegant, juicy, with very high tannins but so fine. Super elegant. My kind of Toro, but totally unusual for this region of extreme heavyweights, usually. 93 13.5% abv.

Date Night at Binomio Spanish 🇪🇸 restaurant. Brought this to dinner tonight. Yet another Oxer in the premium series with a nice artistic label framed by a gold rim. This is Toro, but unlike most Toro you have probably drank. It’s deceptively “light”….14%abv but it fees like 13. Once again beautifully managed tannins. However I felt Kuusu was less expressive than say Oxer’s Mantonni. Is this going to enter a “sleeping” phase soon? It was heavenly with the grilled chorizo&brie, stuffed piquilo peppers!

Lovely Toro, fruity and tannic, full of life. Good balance and medium finish. Cherry, oak, licorice.

Nose has very syrah style characteristics but with more red fruit. Very dry wine with mouth drying gritty tannins. Some herbal and musty notes. Chalky textured. Black and red cherries mostly. Ends with olive and smoked tea notes

A big juicy yet restrained wine, comes from a drought year and shows. Deep ruby coloured, dry with a medium++ body, big grippy tannins and elevated acidity. Nose shows some florality black fruit dark chocolate, notes of black cherry red fruit cherry blackcurrant, palate has decent length and is fruit forward but the acidty keeps all in check. Easy to recommend 👌 maybe keep a few years first.

Toro like no other. Super savory and the label! High tannins, fine and frayed. Superb texture. Outstanding fruit. Tiny 0.9ha plot in south of Toro at 600–650m, known for “beastly” reds from clay soils, but Oxer’s site is sandy, rich with quartz. Ungrafted Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) and 8% Albillo Mayor planted in 1920, co-fermented. Part whole cluster. Minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts, little extraction, co-fermented in foudres and concrete eggs, aged 10–12 mos in 600L French and Austrian oak.

💥 Basque winemaker Oxer Bastegieta crafts Kuusu from a 0.9-hectare plot of centenarian Tinta de Toro vines (planted 1920) on quartz-rich sandy soils in Toro. Tinta de Toro (local Tempranillo clone) with small part of Albillo Mayor; aged 12 months in 600-litre French oak vats. Deep yet fragrant with floral and violet notes, it is lighter and fresher than the usual style in the area. Juicy, concentrated palate with medium body and fine tannins. Round, soft texture with long, flavourful finish.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby Med+ intensity, tapenade, chocolate, blackberry jam, sweet spices, grape gummy, cherry coke, herbal. Med acidity, med- tannin, med alc. (Act high at 14°), med body, med finish. It felt very Mediterranean, quite warm with super ripe (jammy) fruit. Nothing reminded Tempranillo (with Albillo) from Toro - but then it’s Oxer! Unique and unexpected but overpriced (95€), maybe it depends on the vintage.

I am partial to lighter expressions like this one, that belie expectations in a nice way. This had red fruit mainly, it was fresh as spring, it wore its oak so well it wasn't noticeable. Not overripe or over extracted. This had great balance, it was almost weightless. Importantly, it was delicious. Fragrant, great mouthfeel, lovely finish.

Another wow from Oxer. Impossible to say this is Toro, tastes more like top southern Rhône. Delicious fruit, dark and tense. Soft violets, graphite and leather. Crunchy & delicious tannins with great acidity.

Very inviting nose with cherry, earthy, oak, blackberry, menthol, leather and oregano. Palate comes kicking with cherry, raspberry, vanilla, cream, clove, cassis, a mild chocolate note, spicy finish. Tannins are actually smooth and not overwhelming, there’s a lot going on here, it’s a jazzy juice no question about it - but it comes with a cost (90 bucks). Either way, amazing young red 🤘🏻

Wow! A featherweight Toro and the color also telling me so. It’s totally different from any toro I’ve tried. Elegant, structured and balanced. A deep mediation wine and it was poured the last of the series. Already drinking well now but this wine will also go a long way. Love it!
