Matsu El Recio 2023

A dry red wine from the D.O. Toro region, crafted by the Matsu winery. It features intense aromas of ripe blackberry and deep spices, balanced by a juicy body with firm tannins and a structured finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tinta de Toro
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Toro
  • Winery: Matsu
  • Soil / Altitude: Sandy soils with granitic elements
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 14 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The Tinta de Toro grapes are sourced from naturally cultivated vineyards up to 90 years old. The vines grow in sandy soils with a significant presence of granitic elements, which contributes a subtle mineral character.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest to preserve the fruit's integrity, the wine undergoes 14 months of ageing in second-use French and Eastern European oak barrels, achieving a balance between fruit expression and oak complexity.

Why buy it

This red wine is an excellent choice for those seeking a cellar-worthy bottle with authentic regional character. Its structure and freshness ensure a positive evolution in the bottle over the coming years. To add this vintage to your collection, you can buy Matsu El Recio 2023 online directly from our shop.

Oaky, vanilla aromas. Really smooth. Full bodied, long lasting aftertaste but not overpowering. Nice grippy tannins which really pleasant. Notes of clove, blackberries, with hints of leathery oak. Really nice. Tannins smoothen out after awhile making the cup way sweeter.

Lush, deep, dark, rich and complex. Really enjoyed this. Dark fruit, and a little earthy. Paired with Granados’s Quejas from Goyescas.

Toro is my love language. And at this price there is lots of love to go around. Bottomless love one might say. It’s a big one, but that just means it wraps you with an enveloping hug and at the price point one need not feel guilty about it. The espresso and chocolate from the oak shine through while the black fruits caress the nose and palette. The richness is exactly what I want in my Toro.

Serious, warm and confident — much like the face on the label. Ripe black cherry and plum meet cocoa, vanilla and sweet spice. Full-bodied and velvety, with polished tannins and a long, dry finish. Powerful Toro character, yet far more balanced and elegant than expected. That pleasant surprise earns it an extra point.

Big full bodied tempranillo with what you would expect. Possibly needed to let this breathe a bit more but notes of oak, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, raspberry.

Amazing on the nose, offering rich smell of blackberry and vanilla, taste continues with blackberry, blackcurrant, strawberry, leather and spice. Sour cherry notes are, to my liking, just a bit too pronounced.

Gorgeous earthy aromas. Forest mulch, bramble, pine resin and cedar. prune and smoke. The palate offers up a formidable wall of flavour. Dry, sweet, bold...complex. Raspberry, red currant astringent oak and black tea. The alcohol warmth is intense, but not sharp or rough. A long, almost sticky tail that burns, gently, robustly.

A rich and expressive red with notes of raisins, black cherries, prunes and dates, complemented by oak, cinnamon and nutmeg. Velvety and smooth on the palate, with great depth and a long, lingering finish. A beautifully structured wine, perfect to pair with an aged, cured cheese.

Still a very young wine. Decanted it for 1.5 hours and it was still very tight, but it opened up as we drank it in over an hour. You can smell the high alcohol content, deep purple color. Notes of blackberry plum vanilla chocolate oak, quite astringent but became smoother and silkier once it has opened up, long finish. Probably would taste better with some aging. Would drink again.

Opened up really nicely. Great value. Tempranillo from Toro is, as expected, very robust, but balanced and approachable for a steak or other hefty proteins.
