Magallanes 2018

A dry red wine made from 100% Tempranillo in the D.O. Ribera del Duero by César Muñoz. It features a cherry-red color, balanced power with mineral undertones, and a fresh, persistent finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: 100% Tempranillo
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ribera del Duero
  • Winery: César Muñoz
  • Soil / Altitude: Fine gravel, sandy loam, and clay; 900-1000m altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 20 months in new oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from century-old vines located in the easternmost part of the region, at altitudes reaching up to 1000 meters. The terroir features fine surface gravels over deep clay and sandy loam, shaped by harsh winters and hot summers.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following manual selection, fermentation takes place in oak vats using indigenous yeasts, accompanied by extended maceration. The wine is then aged for 20 months in new oak barrels.

For this Ribera del Duero 🇪🇸 red wine: 👁 Clear appearance with a ruby hue. 👃 On the nose, a dry first impression with oak, followed by red fruits, cacao, and a touch of smoke. 👅 On the palate, dry with good acidity and balance. Retro-nasal notes of red fruits and smoky hints. Good persistence and a smooth, medium finish. An elegant red with well-integrated alcohol. Cheers! 🍷

Some nice perfume here and quite a lot of sediment visible in my glass, even after decanting. Tar and tannin in the mouth but not in a vulgar way. Overall, a stiff drink but very enjoyable for what it is.

Powerful purple-red color in the glass! On the nose concentrated aromas of black cherries, plums, cassis and blueberries underlaid with fine raspberry notes, accompanied by sweet tobacco, liquorice, dark chocolate and bourbon vanilla! On the palate full, fine-grained tannins with a aromatic and persistent finish! Cheers!

Nice nose, red and black cherries, plums, hint of vieille prune. Juicy, perfectly balanced, a hole in the middle, rather discret, licorice, wood underneath, great length on licorice again.

This is a warm, wide open and well- structured Tempranillo wine that demonstrates all the freshness and juiciness of the mountain vineyards. On the nose with intense flavors of spicy dark plums, raspberry pulp, creamy dark chocolate truffle, menthol , star anise, clove spice and sandalwood tones. The palate is wide and open, warm and balanced with a serious structure and a persistent aftertaste in which elegant shades of fine leather, vanilla- scented black cherries and cocoa powder appears!
