Domaine de l'A Rouge 2023

A dry red wine from the AOC Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, crafted by the Domaine de l'A winery. It offers aromas of blackberries and black cherries with hints of cocoa, firm tannins, and a long, persistent finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Merlot, Cabernet Franc
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
  • Winery: Domaine de l'A
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay-limestone with Fronsadais molasses
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 16-18 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from 11 hectares of vineyards with an average vine age of 40 years. The soils combine clay and limestone with the presence of Fronsadais molasses, contributing a distinct mineral complexity.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, followed by gentle extraction through pump-overs or manual punching down. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged in oak barrels for 16 to 18 months.

Why buy it

I like many of the Bordeaux wines which the talented consultant Stephane Derenoncourt helps to make. Which always makes his personal wine from Castillon, Domaine de L’A, a must have - particularly as it’s very good value. This is my first bottle of the 2019 which is a Merlot & Cabernet Franc 80/20 blend. Steeped in rich dark fruit with cassis, blueberry and ripe plum, notes of tobacco, oak, and truffles. Still young, but the tannins are silky and it drinks well. This might be my favorite Domaine de L’A yet!

Perfummy on the nose with blackberry, oak, tobacco, milk chocolate, dried red chilly hot pepper, mint & violet. Gorgeous & fresh on the nose. Not a great concentration but acceptable. And it was rather simple on the palate. Almost full bodied & dry. M to M+ fine & chewy tannin & High vibrant acidity. But there was a bit of hollowness on the mid palate.

The 2019 was less expressive, still a little rough around the edges even with a 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, needs some decent decanting time for immediate consumption, this is still delicious as long you are not doing side by side with the 18; deep mahogany burgundy color, smells of smoke, black cherry, blackberry, menthol, white pepper, licorice and clove, still tight with full body, firm body and balanced acidity, tastes of blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, charcoal, bitter root, tar & clove, needs time.

2019 Domaine d l‘A Derenoncourt Domaine de l‘A Cotes de Castillon below st emi. 80/20 ml cf structurally nicely open, expressive fruit, well balanced, focused acidity, superfine tannin structure, warm, but vibrant, feels like a classic, impressive performance for money. 4.2+

Second time with the 2014 of flying winemaker Derenencourt’s own wine and it over delivered! Inviting nose with tomato leaf, red bell pepper, cassis, plum, vanilla, black cherry, black currant and prune followed by a smooth palate with balanced beautiful acidity & dry, constructive tannins, some licorice, a bit of chocolate, toasted oak, dark prune, black cherry, black currant and long finish.

No notes, but really impressed by a glass of this one. First time trying it, big structure in an almost silky palate. I’ll definitely search for a bottle of this one and properly drink it.

Bold, Vibrant, Intense.
Deep ruby in color, this wine captivates with intense aromas of blackcurrant and spicy cedar. The palate is robust, with a structure of firm tannins balanced by lively acidity, leading to flavors of dark berries and a hint of pepper. The finish is strong and enduring, showcasing the assertive character of Côtes de Castillon. 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc.

Had the 2016 fron a magnum bottle at restaurant “Jules Verne” On the 3rd floor of the Eiffel Tower, as part of a 7-course tasting menu. Classic Bordeaux, yet very approachable and very good Started out with lots of floral notes, cherry, blackberries, some leather but overall grit forward, very nicely balanced tannins, and a nice dry and smooth finish. Very nice

From a couple of Friday's ago Commanderie de Bordeaux à Calgary event, it's a tasting of the Direct Import Program wines. These are wines brought in directly by the Commanderie to bypass importer fees. Wine #33 was the third of a mini-vertical from Castillon producer Domaine de l'A, founded by Stéphane and Christine Derenoncourt. Same blend as the previous two, but surprisingly I preferred this to the better vintages of 2015 and 2019. Faster to peak? 🤷‍♂️ Red & black berries, mushroom, licorice, cedar & nutmeg.

Tasting night at the Commanderie de Bordeaux, with ~50 wines on offer. We didn’t have time to try them all, but here’s a sample of a few . . . . A’1 Domaine 2019 Dark fruit, spice box, sweet cherry and caramel. A tasty wine. There was a limited number of bottles to sample, and we had just a small pour. We would have enjoyed another taste of this! Certainly a wine worth seeking IOHO.
