Château d'Esclans Rock Angel 2022

This dry rosé wine from the AOC Côtes de Provence is produced by the Château d'Esclans winery. It features aromas of red berries, floral notes, and a subtle touch of spice, balanced by firm acidity and a long, silky finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Grenache, Cinsault, Vermentino
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Côtes de Provence
  • Winery: Château d'Esclans
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 6 months in 600-liter oak barrels and stainless steel

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from the estate's vineyards in the Esclans Valley and selected plots in the region. Harvesting takes place during the morning and night to preserve the natural freshness of the fruit.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following optical sorting, the must ferments in 600-liter oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Six months of aging with twice-weekly battonage yields a creamy texture and flinty mineral complexity.

Visited Esclans a couple of years ago and was pleased this was part of the premium coravin winepairing @IDD Leiden. Paired with a fine dish with pork belly and scallops. Abv 13,5%.

Full bodied and creamy with strawberries on the nose. White floral peach and low on acidity. Quite elegant.

Textured and creamy with quite subtle red fruit. A nice drink but on this occasion didn’t compare to the preceding bottle of Laurent-Perrier rosé!

Pink in colour with a hue of orange. Nose is fresh. Lemon, pink grapefruit, and red apple. Full of fruit, but not sweet. Very balanced on the palate. Nice summer fruit, pleasant acidity and an elegant bitterness at the medium-long finish. A very refreshing summer wine that can be enjoyed by itself or paired with all kinds of summer or Mediterranean dishes. Fantastic rose that one should start off drinking well chilled.

Salmon pink in colour, a little bit of spice on the nose with strawberry prevalent on both nose and palate. I also got peach to taste, good acidity and nice tangy mouthfeel with good length. High quality Rose.

91 pts | Provence rosé made with 🍇 mainly Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle (Vermentino) from 🇫🇷 Côte de Provence. Fermented and matured partly in stainless steel tanks and in 🇫🇷 French oak barrels. Pale salmon color. Pronounced aroma intensity, ripe peach, strawberry, vanilla, baked apple, floral, melon and dried red cherry. Dry, high acidity, medium body. Juicy redcurrant, raspberry, strawberry, grapefruit, floral, vanilla, toast and mineral notes; long finish. Very good Q, a nice and very food-friendly rosé.

Pale pink in appearance. Complex on the nose, with aromas of red fruits, herbs and slightly roasted almonds from the short stay in oak barrels. Quite full in the mouth with intense acidity and a metallic feel, refreshing with a long and silky aftertaste.

The Château d’Esclans Rock Angel Rosé is a pale salmon-hued wine displaying an elegant bouquet of citrus, melon, rose petal, and green apple. Dry and light-bodied with elevated acidity, the palate is refined and expressive, revealing notes of rose water, strawberry, melon, and citrus zest. The finish is long and gracefully balanced. This is a rosé of exceptional quality, distinguished by its finesse, purity of fruit, and overall elegance.

Brilliant nose of grapefruit and spices. Quite intense, the oak adds structure, but because of that influence, it is not as food versatile as the good unoaked versions. In my case it bonded well with bbq -Lincolnshire sausages. Overall serious rose, a step above Whispering Angel, which is reflected in price. Thist can age 3-5y. 13.5% 91p.

d’Esclans Experience #2 Second in a row was the Rock with the impressive label. Much more bold and heavy Rose (if this the word at all) but the partial oak fermentation adds more structure, depth and creamy notes to the wine. The same blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle. Strawberries here are more dominated by red and raspberry with additional minerality and herbal notes. Spices are also present. This could be a perfect companion to various grilled fish. The most bolder stuff of Esclans Roses. 4.2⭐️ 91JS

Yes this is good. Darker than many roses and the oak notes were welcome. Lasted in the mouth with a lovely finish. Paired with some butter chicken. Kate Bush - Running up that Hill

M:2022 Consumed 2025 As a big provence rosé (apparently) I have tasted better (Ott, Selladore) & I probably enjoy Mr Lichines original line more, but .. The subtle lavender & lack of soda note are welcome & the use of wood to enhance bitterness on the finish is clever Raspberry Watermelon pink grapefruit orange blossom rose water orange peach melon passion fruit pomegranate Dry M6 acid L2 tannin 13.5% M body Traces of glycerin & obvious minerality help too Drinks better the next day, so fairly BiG after all
