Bouza Tannat 2022

This dry red wine made from the Tannat grape variety comes from the Montevideo region of Uruguay, crafted by the renowned Bouza winery. It features a deep ruby color with violet hues, aromas of ripe black fruits, tobacco, and leather, accompanied by a firm structure and well-integrated tannins.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tannat
  • D.O. / Region: Montevideo
  • Winery: Bouza
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay-silt with limestone
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 12 months in oak barrels / Cellaring potential of over 10 years

The vineyard

The vineyards are situated on silty and clay soils with a high percentage of limestone in the Montevideo region. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Río de la Plata provides a moderate maritime climate, which promotes balanced grape ripening.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a careful selection of the grapes, the wine is aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels. This process adds aromatic complexity and helps round out its naturally powerful tannins.

Why buy it

If you are looking to add a cellar-worthy wine with great aging potential to your collection, this is an excellent choice. Its structure and concentration make it an ideal companion for rich, hearty dishes. You can buy Bouza Tannat 2022 online directly from our shop to experience the ultimate expression of Uruguayan winemaking.

Inky black. Has mellowed in 6.5 years. Black fruit, chocolate, figs, licorice. Dry, medium plus acidity, high soft tannins, high alcohol, full body, long finish of figs and chocolate.

🍷 When Tannat found a homeland. Around 1870, Basque immigrant Pascual Harriague planted Tannat in Salto. Uruguay embraced it, and the grape was long known as “Harriague.” Since 2016, it has been celebrated each April 14, the anniversary of the pioneer’s death. After 13 months in French and American oak, this Bouza reveals blackberry, cassis, plum, smoke and spice over firm yet velvety tannins. A dark, vibrant wine whose every sip whispers that a foreign root can become the soul of a proud and intense nation. 🇺🇾

100%Tannat Tilting the glass reveals a deep, dense ruby color, releasing rich aromas of dark plum and blackberry. Delicate spices and sweet oak vanilla overlap seamlessly, creating an elegant bouquet. On the palate, Tannat’s signature bold structure meets smooth tannins and pleasant acidity. Juicy, concentrated fruit expands across the mouth, leaving a passionate, sweet finish. Combining dense depth with refined elegance, this deeply romantic wine draws you in with every single sip. 🍷✨❤️

Black fruit, some minerality and a little violet? Juicy, and moderately dense. Fruit forward.

Drank it after Bresenti tannat and felt even better than the other. I tense ruby colour. Mainly dark fruit and leather. Good acidity and smooth tannin. Bold but still restrained. Perfetly paired with beef stew.

Well made; no defects, but the expression was unidimensional and flat. Difficult to discern any particular characteristic other than well-pitched purple fruit. Not worth the money. Kudos to Bouza for the effort.

Tenant is so underrated or unknown to most. This is an excellent wine with a crisp but clean taste with chocolate and currant notes.

Brick garnet pour. Sophisticated leather nose. Smooth on palate, composed dark fruit, notes of cacao. Medium plus dry finish. Felt like a filtered, polished, abridged version of Tannat after sampling a beefier cousin from Madiran, perhaps to purposefully widen market appeal.

Great for a tannat. These are Rod-tummy wines. Not my favorite overall, but for this variety, this one is excellent.
