Algueira Pizarra 2021

Algueira Pizarra 2021 is a dry red wine from the D.O. Ribeira Sacra, crafted by the Algueira winery. It features a deep profile with aromas of dark fruit, earthy undertones, and a distinct slate minerality, supported by firm tannins and a persistent finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Mencía, Brancellao, Caíño
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ribeira Sacra
  • Winery: Algueira
  • Soil / Altitude: Slate soils
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 18 months in barrels and foudres / High cellaring potential

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from selected steep vineyards where slate-rich soils impart a distinctive mineral character. Among these, the Carballocobo plot plays a key role in shaping the earthy and deep personality of this Galician red wine.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts and a portion of whole clusters, foot-trodden in French oak vats. The wine then ages for 18 months in barrels and foudres to build structure while preserving the freshness of the terroir.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a fine wine with great cellaring potential for your collection, this highly limited red is an ideal choice. Its structure and balance will allow it to evolve beautifully in the bottle over the coming years. You can buy Algueira Pizarra 2021 online directly from our shop to experience the pure expression of Ribeira Sacra.

🗓: 2021 🍇: Not stated 👁: Medium ruby colour 👃: Medium+ intensity for nose. Notes of cherry, cranberry, blackberry, toast, vanilla, earthy, licorice, smoke 👅: Dry, medium+ acidity, full bodied, 13% abv, medium+ (smooth) tannins, palate is similar to nose , medium length finish Nice complexity and balance on the palate. Good wine though I wish the finish is longer. 18 months in oak. 4.2 pts for me

Luminous garnet color deepens toward a warm, clear brick-red edge. Complex bouquet of dried red currants, wild herbs, and graphite blends easily with a background of wood smoke and black pepper. Savory, medium-bodied texture defines the palate, striking an incredible balance between its structural, dusty tannins and a remarkably fresh acidity, revealing deep flavors of dark berries and slate. Long, earthy finish creates a sublime pairing with roasted pork loin, duck confit, or wild mushroom ragù.

Aroma: strawberry, serviceberry, blueberry, leather. The palate is bold and dense: brine, leather, resin, serviceberry, chokeberry. Viscous and dense. A menacing Mencia.

Complex. Initial hit of a floral note of violet and lilac. Then the sour cherry tartness starts to kick in. A bit of sweet tobacco and slate.

Mencia with 24 months of barrel ageing from Algueira winery in Ribeira Sacra 🇪🇸 Mencia is not my kind of grape but can appreciate that this wine is of high quality 🍇 Flavours of cherry and balsamic with notes of earthy, tobacco and leather

Outstanding first encounter—Algueira is a legendary family-run estate in the Ribeira Sacra DO, Galicia. Founded in the 1980s, Algueira is renowned for championing indigenous grape varieties and heroic viticulture on the steep, terraced slopes of the Sil River. 100% Mencía from “esquisto pizarroso” terraces in the 2017 vintage; aged 12 months in French oak barrels. Deep ruby. Aromas of wild berries, violets, and spice. Silky, fresh palate with vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a very elegant mineral finish.

Bought 02/10/24 Ulisses Mao for €103.98 after 7% Club disc Drank at Casa 02-3/10/24. Seems that I got stung on the price a bit, but it's good and interesting red. Penin tasted in 2015 gave it 92 (the 2015 is highest at 95) with a pvp of €25, saying "Colour: Cherry, garnet rim, Aroma: ripe fruit, sweet spices, scrubland, varietal, mineral, Flavour: balanced, round tannins" Earthy and complex

Needs at least an hour for the wine to open up and start to express more balsamic, Prune, oak, blueberry It felt like it had a slight acid imbalance on the palate which let it down a bit but beautiful Mencia

Minerals, red fruits, earthy character. Acidity and tannins well balanced, medium body, complex and intense; there’s a sharpness to it that you come to like after breathing ford ~30min or so. Great companion for grilled white meats, lighter sauces, pork, BBQ and steaks

Clear, deep garnet. Clean & pronounced. Aromas of dried red cherry, raspberry, red plum, dried tea, vanilla, clove, cured meat, dill & leather. The palate is dry with med + acidity and med alcohol. The tannins are med + and finely grained. The body is med and the finish is long. It is pronounced and follows from the nose. Outstanding quality wine. Fruit intensity easily balances the acidity and tannin structure. It has a long well defined finish with a high level of complexity. Great wine. Drinking now.

A bit more mature and tertiary than the other bottle. Prunes, leather, tobacco and baking soda. I would drink up
