Albet i Noya Belat 2013

This dry red wine from D.O. Penedés is crafted by the Albet i Noya winery using the recovered Belat grape variety. It features a pale color, aromas of pipe tobacco, mint, and ripe fruit, balanced by vibrant acidity and velvety tannins.

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from experimental vineyards in Penedés dedicated to reviving pre-phylloxera varieties. The Mediterranean climate and meticulous vine management yield a unique fruit of very limited production.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Harvesting is done manually with strict grape selection. Fermentation and maceration take place in 500-liter French oak barrels, followed by 15 months of oak aging and further refinement in the bottle.

I can't get into this wine. Feels unbalanced and tart. Medium bodied with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with mild complexity. Showing sour cherries dark chocolates light oak earth. Short finish with soft tannins. Might be past its prime but still drinkable. Not my style. 85 points

Fantastic discovery of the recently reinstated indigenous Penedès grape Belat. It responded excellently to more than 10 years aging of which 16 months in oak barrels. Intense nose with tomato leaf, cassis, pure chocolate, black currant and vanilla followed by an equally intense, smooth palate with round acidity, constructive, dry tannins, juicy black fruit, black tea, pure chocolate and impressive finish.
