François Gaunoux Volnay 1er Cru Le Clos des Chênes 2020 Magnum

Dry red wine from the AOC Volnay 1er Cru appellation in Burgundy, crafted from Pinot Noir by the François Gaunoux winery. It features aromas of cherry and raspberry with spicy undertones, an elegant structure with ripe tannins, and a lingering finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Pinot Noir
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Volnay 1er Cru, Burgundy
  • Winery: François Gaunoux
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 16–18 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from the Premier Cru Le Clos des Chênes vineyard in the Côte de Beaune subregion. This historic terroir in the Côte d'Or is managed by the Gaunoux family, whose winemaking heritage dates back to the 16th century.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest and complete destemming, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 16 to 18 months in oak barrels to develop its complexity and structure.

Why buy it

This 1.5-liter magnum format is highly suitable for cellaring, as it promotes a slower and more balanced development in the bottle. If you wish to add a distinguished Burgundy red to your collection, you can buy François Gaunoux Volnay 1er Cru Le Clos des Chênes 2020 Magnum online directly from our shop.

Nose: cherry, roasted plum, blackcurrant. Wood smoke. Orange peel. Dried herbs. Licorice. Slate. High acidity. High acidity. Velvet tannins. Long finish. I expected more. Very elegant, a bit too restrained for my taste. Not really an exciting wine, however correct.

This comes from the Cote De Beaune, in Volnay's Clos Des Chenes. Nose of red fruits and light tea, with earth notes starting to develop as well. Chalky minerality on the mid palate, acidity M+. Lovely more elegant take on Volnay. More limestone here compared to Pommard. Thanks a lot bro EC for reminding me I too have one more in the cellar, the first and only Burg magnum I have. Celebrated my 50th birthday this week!

A very elegant and balanced Volnay. The first impression is about fresh berries, cherry and spices, but it becomes more serious as it evolves in a large Burgundy glass. Somewhat tannic and quite intense, however, it’s less savoury than the 2017 was, but it’s still quite a bold and vibrant expression of the grape variety.

🎯 92/100 pts 4.3 ⭐️ 🇫🇷 Happy Pinot Noir Thursday 🇫🇷 🐣 An early Easter treatment 🐥 🎨 Dark rubin red color with a glint of purple shadow 👃🏼A very young, pure and powerful bouquet with redcurrant, black cherry, plum, truffel and some hint of mushroom on the nose. 👄 Far too young, but great concentration, laiered and nuanced, characteristics with the traditional forrest floor, mushroom, truffel with an earthy and a pretty nice and soft acidity mid-palate. Some minerality lingering finish.

Only 48 bottles to Norway. Unoaked. Cherry and floral-notes on the nose. Dry. Concentrated, vivid, fruit. Nice acidety. Red berries and earthy-notes on the palate. Light and soft mouthfeel. Super-smooth tannins. Long exit with marzipan and almonds. Incredibly easy drinking and juicy. This is a must try😃🍷

Bro Mika’s magnum volnay. Guessed wrongly as a brunello. Slight floral on the nose. This had high minerality, lighter style, lots of raspberry, cherries and leather. Gained complexity in glass, still able to hold itself well after few hours decanting. Lovely drink paired with our empurau tonight.

Medium - to medium body with medium - to medium tannin and a medium acidity. Notes of cherry, strawberry, leather and fresh stripped bark. Express a slightly dark and rustic style, but still with a nicely youthful and fresh structure. Could be fun to follow closely.

Domaine Francois Gaunoux Volnay 1er Cru Le Clos Des Chenes 2016 (TY,CRCLR,JUN21). Excellent clarity. Aromatic nose of fragrant strawberries, sappy raspberries, cherries, enticing flower note. On the palate is very pleasant, exhibiting colourful fruit flavors, spices and minerality. Decent simplicity with pronounced fruit-core chatacter and spicy mineral finish.
