The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from vineyards with an average age of 38 years, located at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level. These plots feature complementary soils and benefit from viticulture practices shared with Vega Sicilia. The altitude and climate contribute to the freshness of the Tempranillo grapes.

Winemaking

The harvest is carried out by hand using small crates to preserve the quality of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in small-capacity tanks for precise extraction, followed by ageing in predominantly new oak barrels.

Excited to try my first Vega Sicilia! Exquisite Ribera del duero Alion bottling has been aged in 80% new French and American oak for 2 years. Incredible depth of flavor and very good length. Pomegranate, cognac, cigar smoke, oak, licorice, and red pepper. Smooth tannins. Medium plus tannins. Medium acidity.

Deep ruby. Offers aromas of violets, blackberries, black plum, cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, clove, toasted wood, graphite (FC). M+, harmonious, and balanced. Mellow acidity. Tannins are serious and grippy but polished. Good length.

100% Tempranillo, about 12 mos in mostly new French oak. Deep Ruby, aromas of dark fruits, spice, floral and earthy oak. On the palate flavors of fresh blackberry & currants with tobacco, licorice and gentle bits of cedar. Tight tannins, supporting the backbone of the wine, could use more bottle age. Well balance with acidity, full body, long finish ends with some fruit, spice, and earthy character. Nice!

This wine is simply perfect! It has a superb body and an exquisite aroma. It’s one of the best Riveras del Duero wines I’ve ever tasted. We decanted it for almost 30 minutes, and it significantly increased the body of the wine. It’s not a cheap wine, but for a special occasion, it’s priceless.

Found the 2018 bit “weaker” than 2019 despite the fact it shows more “stuff” - but not more harmony / integration. Dust, loads of acidity and tannins. This monster will age beautifully but will in my opinion take longer to develop towards full harmony than 2019. Only little barnyard, bacon, dark fruit, chocolate, well integrated oak.

Pretty concentrated, overripe blackberries, cassis liqueur, black coffee, 70% chocolate and tobacco leaves! Vega Sicília tasting dinner on Thursday, 12/09/2024! Such a sweet, rich and alluring nose of plum with hints of earthiness. coconut, prune, chocolate with a gamey twist on the palate. The sweetness is balanced by a touch of earthiness. The above creates a complex and delicious wine. The long finish is smooth, spicy, and elegant. A really well structured wine that leaves you wanting more!

Mövenpick: Mineral, rather closed, with notes of dark berries, wet stone, forest floor and dark chocolate. But very slowly the aromas open up: plums, wild strawberries, elderberry and smoky notes are added. Even black tea and tar can be smelled over time. And the impression of a really great wine is created. The texture is beautifully polished, melty but with a slightly tart finish. It has pressure, character and an almost fiery sharpness.
