Ripe dark fruit, blackcurrant but there’s also noticeable oak, chocolate and coffee even though it still lets the fruit take the forefront

I was super impressed by this RdD. Mix of Tempranillo / Garnacha / Bobal. Smokey, earthy, dark fruits, red fruits and leather. Long finish, complex

Concentrated, red fruited with a prominent Smokey and leathery component which can be interpreted as quite aggressive. Not necessarily the best

This is one of my biggest "thorn in my side", talking about wine. After living almost 3 years in Ribera del Duero, this is definitely far away

A wine from Ribera del Duero 🇪🇸 made of Tempranillo grapes. Vivid cherry-red colour with youthful violet tones at the rim. On the nose

Young and plentiful, vanilla and fruit but not overpowering. Dry, balanced, vanilla vanishes with air and turns into oak. Leather and licorice

Tasted this one 2 years ago, and it was not ready. This time around, much much better. Still young, but it delivers. 92p

Trying the 2022 and I like it as much as I liked the 2020. This is such a fun, generous and sappy RdD!

Description

This wine has an attractive bright cherry colour that invites you to discover its complexity. On the nose, it displays intense aromas of ripe fruit and a delicate touch of violet candy, which highlight its expressive and mineral character. On the palate, it is full of flavour, with spicy notes that harmonise with its vibrant acidity, leaving a persistent and balanced impression.

Pícaro del Águila 2022, a red wine with Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, is born from the mastery of Dominio del Águila, located in La Aguilera, Burgos. Founded in 2010 by Jorge Monzón and Isabel Rodero, this winery has its roots in the experience of Jorge, who began his oenology studies in Bordeaux and then built his career at renowned wineries such as Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia. With 35 hectares of vineyards, which include 30 hectares of old vines and 5 relatively young hectares, they mainly cultivate the Tempranillo variety, accompanied by other native varieties such as Bobal, Garnacha and Albillo, in sandy-calcareous soils at 900 meters of altitude.

From viticulture to winemaking, at Dominio del Águila they passionately dedicate themselves to an artisanal process, demonstrating a deep respect for nature and fusing tradition and knowledge. From the application of herbal infusions such as valerian and honeyfoil in the care of the vines to the decision not to clarify or filter the wine, they strive to create organic wines capable of aging for a long time, but also suitable to enjoy on any occasion.

This wine is fermented in concrete tanks, following traditional methods that highlight its authenticity. The grapes are traditionally crushed in the winepress, keeping the bunches whole, without destemming, to preserve all their essence. The malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, taking place slowly in oak vats, which adds depth and complexity to the final profile of the wine. Pícaro del Águila then spends around 12 months in French oak vats.
