Matalaz 2024 is an extraordinary red wine made by the Oxer Wines winery in the DOCa Rioja. Oxer Bastegieta, a young Basque viticulturist and winemaker, is dedicated to creating superlative wines using old vines from two subzones of the DOCa Rioja: Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, in the municipalities of Elvillar and Cárdenas. With an organic and regenerative agriculture approach, he works his vineyards using traditional methods such as the man-mule plow, respecting the natural environment as much as possible. In the winery, intervention is minimal to allow the wines to fully express the terroir.
The result is unique and surprising wines, highly acclaimed by critics and greatly appreciated by enthusiasts. Matalaz 2024 is made using old vines cultivated in the town of Lapuebla de Labarca, with a traditional mixed planting and very low yields per hectare. The vines are between 50 and 80 years old, growing in stony soils.
Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in a 6.500 liter vat with 20% stems, followed by malolactic fermentation in used 500 liter French oak barrels and aging for 8 months in barrels of various uses.
