A different Rioja made with a coupage of 4 grapes that gives it more minerality and complexity. Drank at Bascoat with the UM team

3.8 A modern Rioja that stays away from the oak and focuses on the purity of fruit, resulting in a very approachable wine, even this young. Good

Wine needs to breathe initally and let its strong leather aroma spread. Wine is quite intense and dry, very well balanced and with a long aftertaste.

En Primeur impression, it’s super earthy, mineral, stemmy with touch of cassis and cedar undertone. Young wine but doesn’t taste like that young

Description

On the nose, this wine stands out for its dominant aromas of red fruit, complemented by marked floral notes. In the mouth, it has a pleasantly fresh acidity, offering a fine and prolonged experience. This wine is very subtle, ideal for those who appreciate elegance and delicacy in each glass.

Matalaz 2022 is an extraordinary red wine made by the Oxer Wines winery in the DOCa Rioja. Oxer Bastegieta, a young Basque viticulturist and winemaker, is dedicated to creating superlative wines using old vines from two subzones of the DOCa Rioja: Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, in the municipalities of Elvillar and Cárdenas. With an organic and regenerative agriculture approach, he works his vineyards using traditional methods such as the man-mule plow, respecting the natural environment as much as possible. In the winery, intervention is minimal to allow the wines to fully express the terroir.

The result is unique and surprising wines, highly recognized by critics and highly valued by fans. To make Matalaz 2022, old vineyards grown in the town of Lapuebla de Labarca are used, with traditional mixed planting and very low yields per hectare. The vines are between 50 and 80 years old, growing in pebble soils. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in a 6.500-liter vat with 20% stems, followed by malolactic fermentation in used 500-liter French oak barrels and aging for 8 months in barrels for various uses.

Buying Matalaz 2022 wine guarantees a unique experience, capturing the essence of Rioja in each glass.
