Pauillac, situated on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, about 40 km north of Bordeaux, benefits from a temperate climate and a unique diversity of soils originating from the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, providing ideal conditions for the creation of exceptional wines.
The Château Lafite Rothschild vineyard is strategically located north of Pauillac, close to the border with Saint-Estèphe. It is divided into three main areas: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and an additional 4,5 hectares in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Totalling 112 hectares, the soils are composed of deep gravel mixed with eolian sand, on a tertiary limestone subsoil, ensuring excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure.
Carruades de Lafite is produced using traditional Bordeaux methods. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in wooden, concrete and stainless steel vats, with gentle pumping over to ensure a delicate and precise extraction according to the characteristics of each tank. Maceration lasts approximately 20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then racked into French oak barrels, made by the Tonnelleries des Domaines, where it ages for approximately 16 months.
